Field A category of information in a database, such as a Name, Address or Telephone Number.

 

File Any itemstored on a computer for example a program, a document or an image.

 

File Extension A code, usually of three letters, that appears at the end of a file ame to indicate its format (what type of file it is, i.e jpg.,gif.) 

 

File format The way in which files created by differebt programs are saved. This differs from program to program, so that one program may have difficulty reading files created by another. Commen file formats are: Text: .asc .doc .htm .html .msg .eps .wpd - Image: .bmp .eps .gif .jpg .pict .png .tifSound: .au .mid .ra .snd .wav - Video: .aci .mov .mpg .qt - Compressed: - .arc .arj .gz .hqx .si .tar .z .zip - Program: .bat .com .exe  

 

Flash A plug-in that enables animations and games to play within  browser window. 

 

Floppy Disk A portable data storage device used on older computers. Each 3,4inch disk can hold up to 1,44MB of information. See Hard Disk

 

Folder An electronic storage compartment used to keep related files and documents in the same place on a hard disk. 

 

Font A particular style of type, such as Ariel,Times New Roman or Helvetica. Most fonts can be displayed in different sizes. They can also be displayed in bold or italic, or with other effects. 

 

Format To alter the appearance of a document - for example, it's tyography, layout, and so on. 

 

Freeware Programs, usually produced by hobby programmers, for which users do not pay a fee. Freeware but Freeware can also be profesional software which is offered free and can be downloaded for free from the internet. 

 

Function keys The 12 keys (labelled F!, F2 and so on) at the top of the keyboard. Their function depends, on which program is in use. So, for instance, Shift + F7 in Word call up the Thesurus, and F12 will call up the SAVE AS Dialog box
