When designing a website you may find these points useful

1. Avoid the use of Frames. Search Engines do have the ability to crawl sites with framesets but their ability is very limited to see and interpret frames. Frames have the following disadvantages:

1.1 Not every Search Engine can index and crawl pages made up from framesets.

1.2 Frames are causing problems according to Google and Google does not recommend to use frames.

If you insist on using frames make sure your NOFRAMES tag to include no frames version of the content and do not just write "This page requires frames compatible browser, your browser does not support frames" It is your choice, you either want to have a website which is indexed and people can read or not. DO NOT USE FRAMES!!!

1.3 Even though, when Search Engines index and crawl frames they may just index and crawl only a section and it will appear in the Search Results just as one frame of a frameset, and the visitor can only see a page without navigation buttons and other parts of the site may not display such as the header or footer.

1.4 A HTML page consists of only one frame. So if multiple frames are used, it is as if you use multiple html pages in the same page. This concept goes against the basic idea of a web page.

1.5 Do not us a lot of graphics that take a long time to load.

1.6 Flash - this takes too long to discuss here, but if you do not know how to duplicate flash in a separate file which Google or other Search Engine can read than do not use Flash. The use of Flash by web designers who do not know how to use flash is increasing. It can look pretty but it is deadly for your website if not used correctly.

1.7 Always use ALT text when using a graphic. Even when the browser is turned off not to display graphics, a description will still be displayed. It will also help Search Engines in identifying content of the site.

1.8 Do not let HTML tags gain the upper hand. Always have more actual content than HTML

use colours and fonts which go well together. Design and layout is a matter of personal choice but try to present a page which looks professional and pleasing to the eye.

1.9 The correct use of all the Meta Tags is of paramount importance. Without the correct use your site will not go anywhere

2. Do not use redirects. The danger is, that Search Engine could interpret your redirects as spamming.

Why? because a redirect can be seen by the search engine but not by the visitor. If you feel you need to redirect for some reason than use the only safe redirect, the permanent 301 redirect.
